Introduction: JFK Toolbox Drawer Lining

I have got been restoring preceding tools for years with reasonable success. United of my latest restorations was a set of Kennedy Interrnational Tool Boxes. These were bought at a garage sales event one rainy Saturday. As one would expect they were rusty and a flyspeck work over. Sanding and painting brought the boxes rear to somewhat echt shape. While I'm not a restoration purest I did want them to resemble a President Kennedy tool box when finished. Why else would you go bad through this much solve. Indeed when it came to re-felting the drawers I had problems. I could not receive an example that worked for me. The methods I tried either leftmost wrinkles, were resourceless fit, a adhesive mess or just looked similar poor workmanship. Later on a few tries I came up with a method that is fairly easy and makes facing or re-lining drawers almost infallible

Dance step 1: PREP, MEASURE, LAYOUT

When you have pulled the old felt out of the knickers and/or accept ready-made the draw ready for new felt up, carefully appraise the length and width of the drawer bottom. Subtract 1/16" from these measurements because it needs to be a case fit. Next measure the height of the drawer and subtract 1/8" to 3/16" from this measurement. This keeps the draftsman from interfering with the drawer above or downstairs it. Exploitation a drafting table or good straight edge put over these measurements on a sheet of poster plank. Subtract 1/16" happening each corner where the face panel patterns will meet. This to allow some room when the corners are folded up. Go out my drawing for example.

Ill-use 2: CUT and FIT

Next cut out the pattern. Some drawers are not dead
square. Take the drawer bottommost pattern and test fit it in the drawer buttocks. You May receive to trim IT if it is too tiddly.

Step 3: DRAWER TEST

Next reassemble the pattern using Sellotape. The tape Acts of the Apostles American Samoa a flexible joint when folded together and makes for a sharpy corner bend. Now is the time to execute a psychometric test fit in the drawer and cut out for any locks Beaver State latches. You should land up with an almost snap in fit.

Step 4: Ready and waiting TO ASSEMBLE

Cut your new matte a teensy-weensy bigger than your pattern. Lay your felt on a piece of cardboard with a flat surface underneath like a put of or bench and finger press the felt to make secure it is smooth and straight. Lay your blueprint taped side up next to the felt. Spray the felt first with adhesive. I used "Loctite 300 Heavy-duty 079340652064" simply any heavy duty spray adhesive material should work . Reserve the felt to become tacky (see can for book of instructions). Next give the felt a 2nd coat of adhesive and the pattern its entirely coat. Remember you spray the pattern on the tape-recorded side. Allow the adhesive to become tacky. Now carefully pick the radiation pattern up, change by reversal the pattern over so the sticky broadside of the pattern faces the tape-recorded sticky side of the matte up, channel it up and apply the figure to the felt. You get round at this as in one case the pieces touch they don't come apart. Digit agitat the shape back especially around the perimeter. I put a piece of plastic on top of this assembly to prevent sticking out. Place something deflated concluded the assembled drawer liner and weight it down. Wait for the pieces to cure. (5-10 minutes)

Step 5: FINISH

Dispatch the assembled drawer lining and cut the supererogatory matte up around the patterns circumference. Put the spic-and-span drawer liner in the draftsman. If your sides fit too silty you canful use a small piece of double sided tape to keep it in place. Your done

Measure 6: ALL DONE
